PhD in Management Information Systems

Program Description

Introduction

The MIS PhD is a specialization within the existing Fox School PhD in Business Administration program. Overall, the program will follow the structure of the PhD in Business Administration and consist of a set of five core courses on business models and methods, four specialized MIS courses, and three electives. The program requires approximately two years of course work and additional time for the dissertation. The average expected time to completion is 4 years.

Admission Requirement

Admission to the Fox School of Business and Management PhD MIS specialization will require competency in the state of art of applied information technology. Typically such competency will be demonstrated by at least one of the following:

  • A recent master's degree in information systems or equivalent, or significant technical work experience across the areas described by the four-course core of the MIS MS program.
  • Prospective students who do not meet the above requirements may be asked to take additional masters level courses in the MIS program. All prospective students will also have to meet the normal admission requirements of the PhD in BA program.

In most cases, we will need to know your academic credentials such as GMAT or GRE test scores before we can provide you with assistance.

NOTE: The program accepts only fall submissions. The deadline for applying for fall admission in the current year is about 9 months earlier, i.e. in January. In some cases later admissions can be considered, but not later than late March as the last admissions committee meeting takes place early in May before classes end.

Please make sure you send all official material and your complete application to the Fox School Admissions Department. Do not send the application, transcript, or any other official document to the MIS department. This could significantly delay the review process. However, students are strongly recommended to send copies of their resume, test score, transcripts, statement of professional goals, and references to the MIS department (Attention: Senior Program Specialist, Joseph Allegra). This will allow the department to informally counsel you and expedite the process.

Funding

Funding and scholarship options for new PhD in MIS students are listed below. In addition, there may be additional funding available for students through grants and projects that are currently in progress inside the department. Therefore, it is important that you contact the department as early as possible to discuss admission.
