What is an MIS Graduate Assistantship?

The Graduate Assistantship (GA) carries full tuition remission, health care benefits and a stipend of 13,992 per academic year.  Each assistantship requires about 20 hours per week of the student's time in research, teaching, and administrative related activities. Depending on your qualifications you may be assigned to a combination of the above activities or be asked to specialize in one area.

GA awards are based on an academic year and are typically not renewed after the first year.  A GA award covers the Fall and Spring semesters, summer support is not included.

  • If you have applied for an assistantship in the past, you must re-apply for the semester you wish to be considered for an assistantship.
  • When an online application is submitted, it is not necessary for students to contact the department for updates.
  • If additional information is needed, someone will contact the student.

New Students: To be eligible for consideration for a GA award your application file must be complete. We cannot make a decision unless the admissions office informs us that the application file is complete.

Due Dates

The due date for MIS GA applications is the same as the due date for admission to the graduate programs in the Fox School of Business and Management. The current dates for Fall admissions is March 15, and for Spring admissions, it is September 30. Applications after that date will be considered on an as available basis. We reserve the right to award positions to candidates who submit their material before the admission deadline.

Selection Criteria

GA positions will be awarded based on the following:

  • Academic record including test scores
  • Work experience
  • Compatibility with departmental needs for teaching and research
  • Recommendations

In some cases, we may require a telephone or face to face interview to process your application further. A committee of MIS faculty will select the candidates.

Notification

If you have been selected to receive a GA award you will be notified by email. In addition, you will also receive a formal letter from the Fox School of Business and Management. The formal letter will contain an acceptance form that you must fill out and return to the provided address as soon as possible and before the listed due date. If you do not return this form then your GA position may be awarded to another applicant. The letter will be sent to the address of record in the university registration or admissions system.
